Spotting cancer

Cancer is a disease caused when abnormal cells divide uncontrollably and can occur in any part of the body and invade nearby tissue or spread to other parts of the body.

Cancer is a cause of distress, anxiety, illness and death for many people and their families every year, however, many cancers are preventable or treatable if picked up early.

One in three people will be affected by cancer at some stage in their life. There are many different types of cancer and this page doesn’t cover them all, but the general information will help you to access further information and support.

The links below are to help advise on lifestyle choices to prevent cancer, but also provide further information on possible symptoms of concern that you should see a GP about. There is also information on the NHS screening programmes and resources if you have been diagnosed with cancer.

Participating in screening programmes and presenting early with symptoms helps with early diagnosis and better outcomes.
